Experience with Magic Bus

I am still travelling with Magic Bus Tours NZ right now (springtime) & there are a few things I would like to mention about Magic for other travellers to consider whether they want to travel with Magic or not.I bought the North-South Pass which is at a reasonable price when it is at discount. But they always seem to have a special offer (or at least have been extending their offer for the last few months.) So NEVER buy the Magic Bus Ticket if it is not HALF-PRICED! Paying the full price (which is about 800 NZ$) is definetly not worth it! The positive aspects about the Magic Bus are limited! Best point for me was that it is not a party bus. You ll be travelling with people that are average between age 25-40, which was really pleasant for me. I also enjoyed some of drivers which did a good job as guides & really took well care of you & provided a lot of inside information. (Sometimes the recommendations were not that good though & I felt like as if I had wasted my money on their advice: e. g. the Waitomo Caves Guided Tour (not the Black Water Refating!) was totally not worth the price & our bus drivere REALLY recommended doing that tour, coz otherwise you would miss out. And everyone else on that tour was disappointed by the not talkative guide as well (& he is one of the guys that owes the Caves, so he ll be always around!) A really negative aspect of travelling with Magic is that their schedules (I can only talk about the spring season) are very inconvenient. When you arrive into a City you usually only have the choice of staying either one night or four nights! One night is hardly ever enough (since you usually just arrive somewhat in the afternoon & only have a couple of hours left for that destination!) & four nights is just way too many (unless you are in Queenstown where there is plenty of stuff to do to fill four nights). Talking to some of the bus drivers of Magic they totally agree, but since they are not in charge cant change anything about the lacking schedules. Additionally some of the bus drivers were not very careful with your luggage & literally throwing it onto the street. I know, most of us are just backpackers, but our backpacks need to be treated with care as well! Another big inconvenience for me (that actually made me write this review right now) is that they are just changing their schedules without notifying their customer. I was supposed to get picked up today (after 3 nights in Dunedin, which is plenty!) at 8.15AM after I arranged my pick up time on the internet (which clearly stated that today is a pick up day!). BUT when the bus was not there, I decided to call them to ensure that they would not forget about me (coz no one else was at the pick up point & furthermore you dont get a confirmation for your pick up (you just have your date & time to look at on the internet!). On the phone with one of their agents, I was asking about the bus & all she told me was that there had been a change of the timetable. Ok, so IF there is a change of schedule times, why would they not at least bother to contact people to notify them? The agent told me they did not have any contact details of me, which is certainly not the case, coz when I booked the ticket I had to enter my email adress!!! Is this too much effort to send an email saying that there has been a change of schedule? And now that I just logged on to my Magic itinerary again on the internet, they had already postponed my pick up time to tomorrow without any notification again. I have to leave tomorrow anyways since I am on a tight schedule & have to catch a flight from Christchurch in 2 days..but what if the flight was a day earlier? I could have only paid for an additional transfer with another bus company! I would not recommend travelling with Magic!!! |
