I am really disappointed. We stay in Lemon-tree for 2 and 1/2 weeks and over 1 1/2 without any work. Lemon-tree was overcrowded. Over 35 persons for 3 showers, 3 sinks and 3 ovens, just 2 tables in the kitchen and 3 tables outside (non covered (rain)).We have slept in a tent and paid 180§ for 2 people. In a dorm, you have to pay 120-130$ each person. Some people slept in there own car at the carpark for 180§ (2 people). NO RELATION. The neighbors are very laud every day. Sleeping is just possible with earplugs. Internet is very expensive (Internet --> Internetcafe in the City). Showers and kitchen are closed from 9 to 12,30 o'clock, every day! video surveillance in the kitchen and on the floor. If you don't clean your dishes, the owner threat with charge your credit card (5§ item (video surveillance)). TV lounge is dirty. The Owners are very unfriendly, just interested to make money. If you leave Lemon-tree, you lose your work, no matter you stay in Blenheim or not. In Blenheim are others, good accommodation, lock on the "black board" in countdown. |

this hostel is only about making money/saving money. rates are high, service is low. kitchen is to small and closed for 3 hours every day. in that time you are not even allowed to use the microwave to warm your food. in winter it is never warm, because you are not allowed to use the (to small) heater during the day ("too expensive"). i was freezing every single day ("then put more clothes on") and even had shivers during the night. the toilets/showers are just metal cabins with no heater option --> super freezing. list would go on but i don't want to think about it any longer. worst hostel i have been in NZ. definitely not recommend it. |

Lemon Tree Review

I stayed here back in 2004 FOR 6 MONTHS whilst working locally. I agree that the main thing is the people you stay with, and this could make or break your experience. I was lucky enough to be around some great people, and despite a few odd balls that stayed from time to time, it was all good, social, respectful and a good craic. The owners, Karen and Andrew were nothing but freindly, polite and more than helpful, as was the staff they had whilst i was there; no complaints here. The facilities are fine, you just have to time it well in the kitchen. I would like to say that the first review on here is utter bullshi#. If internet is too dear, just go into town, and the showers were actually really good. I'm not keen on sharing with too many people, so was lucky tostay in a six bed dorm; again this was fine, clean and as secure as you can expect. i would highly recommend this hostel, certainly over the grapevine, and would ask that you say hi to karen, andrew and ethan for me.Blenheim is never going to set the world on fire, but if you do have to stay here to find work, stay at the lemon tree. kitchen is too small for more than 30 workers. no attractions like pool-table, hot spa, free breakfast or Sky TV and internet too expensive, just 3 unhygienic showers for more than 30 guys, incompetent staff, TV set to small and TV-room looks unclean and inconvenient

i stayed here for about two months and came to become part of the lemon tree family. some of the best times i had in new zealand were here so i suppose it depends on the people who are there but the owners were very helpful in finding us jobs at no extra price. i would recommend it to anyone on a tight travel budget.
