if going to Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula stay at Turtle Cove it is one of the nicest cleanest backpackers I have ever seen, though there is not a lot to do in Whitianga. Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove are two of the best free activities in the country. Hot Water Beach when you time it right you can dig yourself a large hole which will fill with hot water heated form geothermal vents under the sand and then as the sea comes in and the two water temperatures mix it creates your own hot tub, but get there early as it can get busy and remember your spade to dig your own hole oh and it’s a really good surf beach with board hire by the car park. Cathedral cove is well worth the walk down but again time it right with the tides or else you will get cut off there is kayaking available to go round the cove and its supposed to give some of the best views of the cove.
