The main attraction to both of these places is the amazing Glow Worm Caves with black water rafting and caving available, though Waitomo (King Country) is closer there is very little else to do there other than visiting the Angora rabbit farm and watch them being sheered. The YHA is amazing clean big and very friendly. Hamilton has more to do on an evening and during the day if you fancy spending a few days in the area but it is further out.
