A pleasant surprise.....

Great hostel set in the native bush. We were somewhat skeptical after reading some of the reviews but it seams the new owners are really making an effort to clean the place up. The newly renovated ensuite is great with sky TV and its on kitchen. We came for two nights and stayed a week.

Not quite what we were expecting.

A hip little hostel in the middle of backpackers valley, surrounded by bush.We booked the private room with ensite and kitchen for the weekend so we could attend a wedding on the island. ($120 per night) The staff were in party mode when we arrived but the pool and decking is impressive. The room however needs new carpet as it was quite stained, the sheets had stains so we sleep on top of the covers, there was cracks in the glass in the door and there was no soap in the bathroom, which could have also done with a good clean, in particular the shower. On the door is a black full lenght shade which is see through so we didn't feel we had privacy so changed in the bathroom. Due to the bush setting there were plenty of insects and spiders so the mostiquo net comes in handy except it had holes in it and was stained in parts. Overall, not what we were expecting. |

Hekerua Lodge is a backpackers on the Island and the English owner will pick you up free of charge from the ferry port. Out in a bush setting with unlimited access of an open air pool and spa included in the price of a nights stay, it is a great place to relax. It is a smaller hostel with an incoming phone line that you can also use to make free outgoing local calls which includes Auckland City
